At last, the game I found worthy of christening our brand new HD cam with is released. If you liked what you saw in the preview, prepare $0.99 already.
League of Evil ($0.99: | FREE:
)
Super Meat Boy is one of the most recent cult platformer hits. It?s witty, attractive and addictive all of which League of Evil possess. It?s hard not to draw comparisons especially when both are epic games, and both are truly must haves.
Presentation
I don?t appreciate a lot of 8-Bit games, but when used in platformers, I usually love it. Take Super QuickHook for example. League of Evil started as a Flash version just like Canabalt
. On the iPhone (even though lacking retina and iPad optimization), the game looks G.R.E.A.T.
Controls
You get a left and right stick for moving. Jumping through walls is performed by pressing the B button while ?walking? in that direction. Killing enemies (whether off or on ground) can be done using the A button. The controls couldn?t have been any simpler and more fit for the iOS.
Gameplay
Somehow this game reminds me of ILLUSION LABS? good ?ol Sway . That game was a breath of fresh air among platformers and so is this game. There are these games that just elevate the genre to a new territory.
Sure collecting stars, or in our case ?suitcases?, and trying to complete levels within a specified amount time are not new to the genre. However, when done right like shown here in League of Evil, it can turn into something else.
As mentioned, gameplay is painstakingly simple. Get from start to finish in the least amount of time to get the most stars. Along the way, you should pick up suitcases first before kicking and disembodying the ?exit guy?.
While this all sounds too easy, throughout the game?s 50 levels, ninjas, laser beams, thorns and other crazy shenanigans scattered. Levels should not take you more than a minute to either finish (or die, lol). Lastly, the game is hooked up with Game Center leaderboards and achievements.
Suggestions
I normally wouldn?t suggest this to an 8-Bit game, but after seeing Canabalt?s eye ball numbing retina display, I?d wish for that too. Also, can we see an iPad version as well?
Conclusion
A lot of developers try and do too much to a genre. League of Evil doesn?t change much, but what it did, it used to its advantage. There?s a veil of mystery how games like this keep you occupied from the very first level you play til the end.
In the game, you fight of the ?league of evil?. Now that I?m close to finishing the game (and I never finish games), the only thing evil here is the game itself. I dare you to start playing and put the game down?. just try!
