Iman al-Obeidi, Alleged Libyan Rape Victim, Arrives In U.S.: Report

Iman al-Obeidi, the Libyan woman who claimed to have been raped by Muammar Gaddafi's forces, reportedly landed in New York on Friday, CNN reports.

According to CNN, she is "excited and happy" to be in the U.S., and expressed gratitude to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for providing asylum.

Al-Obeidi made headlines in March when she burst into a room full of journalists in the Libyan capital of Tripoli, claiming to have been assaulted and raped by Gaddafi's forces. She was then forced from the room. In a subsequent interview, she described being gang raped, beaten, and sodomized with a gun by forces loyal to the Gaddafi regime.

After the incident, al-Obeidi left Libya, fleeing to Tunisia in May. CNN reports that she spent 54 days in a U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees facility in Romania before arriving in the U.S.

After speaking briefly with CNN, Al-Obeidi said that she was not ready to speak with the press at this time.
